The Comfortable Commute

When I first started working in NYC, I was amazed to see on my Health App on my iPhone that I walk between 3-5 miles per work day! I commute to work on the subway, and I realized that the walk to and from my stops–not to mention the stairs I climb during train transfers–really adds up. While it’s great to get some extra cardio (and let’s be honest, I often count my commute as my daily workout…), I have also found that it gets hard on my feet.

When I was growing up, I always swore I would never wear a skirt suit and bulky sneakers.  I’ve been pleasantly surprised with the alternatives I’ve found that are both fashionable and foot-friendly!  These ain’t your mama’s walkin’ shoes!  (No offense, Mom!)  Here are three that are in my current rotation. I can wear these all day and they keep my dogs from barking*!

1. Adidas Stan Smiths

Stan Smiths

These made a huge comeback a few years ago, and for good reason. They’re the perfect neutral shoe. They add a “cool girl” effect to almost any outfit. I wear these both on the commute as well as the weekend. I usually pair these with pants–for work, they look amazing with both wide-leg pants and skinny ankle trousers.  For weekends, they’re great with jeans, leather leggings, or shorts.

2. Everlane Street Shoes

These are modeled as the street version of Everlane’s Modern Loafer, which I also own and love.  While they’re both a very comfortable flat, the street shoe boasts a cushy foam footbed that is both stable yet comfortable. I usually wear these with skirts and dresses, as they’re more polished than a traditional sneaker.

3. Asics Gel Fit Sana Shoes

These are the most athletic of the bunch, and definitely the most comfortable. They’re super lightweight, and when you wear them you feel like you’re walking on air. The shoe is sock-like– there isn’t a separate piece for the tongue, so they really fit like a second skin. I think the back strappy section is a great detail that gives these shoes a unique look. I chose the grey-black combination, as they pair well with a lot of different looks. I usually reserve these for my skinny legged trousers during the workweek, but I also wear them for a lot of my laid back weekend looks. These shoes are so comfortable that they truly get me excited to get up and get moving. These guys feel a-mazing.
