Happy Friday! Today I’m wearing a version of my “work uniform.” I typically wear slightly funky separates that work together nicely. When I build outfits like these, I start with whatever piece I want to focus on–in this case, the windowpane trousers. As you can see, I love patterned pants. I’ve realized that you don’t necessarily need to downplay the rest of your outfit just because your pants are a little nutty, so I sometimes turn Casual Friday into “Experiment Friday” to play around with mixing patterns and colors. I decided to semi-match my geometric pants with some old brogues from Saint Laurent I scored on clearance a few seasons ago at Barney’s Warehouse that are equal parts business and Michael Jackson.
This light pink blazer is so versatile. I bought it from Zara in 2012 right after I saw this dream suit walk the runway at Givenchy. Though I never managed to figure out a way to make it into a full suit, I have been pleasantly surprised at how easy it is to incorporate into both my work and weekend wardrobes.
This cami is great. It’s double lined in the front, so it’s not see-through at all, making it perfect for work. It has the most amazing lace straps–you can cover them with your blazer for the 9 to 5, then bring them out for happy hour. Perfection!
Finally, this backpack is my #1 recommendation of an ultimate investment piece if you live in a city where you commute by walking/public transportation. It has about a zillion pockets, so it’s great for stashing all of your weekday needs, it has an extra strap so you can convert it into a slouchy shoulder bag when you need to look a little more polished, it has an expandable zip middle so it can fit a 13″ computer, and it seems to look better the more I beat it up. The daily grind can be rough on your commuting bag–I’ve had this one for approximately 5 years and it’s held up over the years of abuse from law school text books, computers, sack lunches, rain, snow, and everything in between.
